The Official Mediavore Thanksgiving Survival Guide

When we were kids, Thanksgiving meant sleeping in, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, and growing hungry as breakfast and lunch fell victim to the kitchen’s single-minded obsession with producing Thanksgiving dinner.

Now that we’re grown-ups, we get up early to delete answer old emails, the parade seems mildly ridiculous, and we’re still hungry.

What’s to be done? We have a collection of good stuff to help you make it through the day.

Turkey Confidential with Lynne Rossetto Kasper LIVE 11am-1pm ET/8am-10am PT

This cornerstone of any credible culinary stimulus package is well-timed: from our experience, most Thanksgiving dinner catastrophes begin to unfold around 11am ET. Hey, if it happens to you, call Lynne. Guests will include Garrison Keillor, Chris Kimball from America’s Test Kitchen, and Splendid Table regulars like Josh Wesson and the Sterns.

The show airs live on stations all over the country. If your station isn’t carrying it, it won’t be hard to find an online stream of it. (Heck, here’s one option) By the way, Splendid Table has a collection of Thanksgiving recipes sure to satisfy, as well as upset the weight balance on your plane ride home.

Third Coast International Audio Festival Broadcast (times vary)

Third Coast collects and recognizes some of the best radio reporting and documentary productions. And the best of the best appears on this annual two hour special – most stations air it on Thanksgiving weekend. You can check listings or listen here. Produced by Chicago Public Radio.

The American Experience: FDR

This PBS doc is 4 hours long, but if you have limited time, you can watch hours 2 and 3 and you’ll get the meat of it – how FDR fought the Great Depression and prepared the country for war. This mediavore watched the entire doc last month and found it truly inspiring. Watch here or download on iTunesU. Or dive into PBS Video for hours and hours of shows and documentaries.

Momma Stamberg’s Cranberry Relish Recipe

Back before the invention of radio, NPR sent out this recipe annually by telegraph. Now, on the Internets, you can listen to Susan Stamberg performing this year’s recitation with Ruth Reichl, or any year back to 1999. The recipe, along with a picture that would make a food photographer cry, is here.

National Day of Listening: November 27

Storycorps is on a national campaign to get us to listen – to our parents, grandparents, sons, daughters – to the people who matter most to us. It’s your personal Storycorps, and NPR is showcasing the concept this week, as program hosts interview important people in their lives.
