All that flotsam in the ocean
Listen live at 1pm ET/10am PT
There’s tons and tons and tons of garbage floating in the ocean. The currents carry it for thousands on miles, aggregate it into huge patches of floating garbage, and sea creatures consume it, and often die because of it.
There’s an obvious environmental story here, but all that garbage has also provided oceanographers with valuable information about how ocean currents work.
KUOW’s Weekday explores ocean garbage today, with Dr. Curtis Ebbesmeyer, co–author of Flotsametrics: How one Man’s Obsession with Runaway Sneakers and Rubber Ducks Revolutionized Ocean Science.
