Exploring architectural ruins

asylum_picHere’s a fun piece from New Hampshire Public Radio’s Word of Mouth: a visit to the old New Hampshire Asylum for the Insane in Concord.

There are still some mental health units in operation at what is now the State Hospital there, but many of the oldest buildings are closed and locked. Producer Avishay Artsy and photographer Christopher Payne went inside and discovered scenes frozen in time over 30 or 40 years. There’s been some vandalism, but remarkably little, relatively speaking. That makes a trip there more fascinating than creepy.

Payne has published a book of photos, Asylum: Inside the Closed World of Mental Hospitals.

Listen to the piece.
