The legacy of Agent Orange in sculpture
Dartmouth College graduate student Keisha Luce has used a process she calls “documentary sculpture” to capture the lingering damage of Agent Orange on millions of people of Vietnam.
After visiting Vietnam, Luce created six sculptures displaying the deformities of people exposed to Agent Orange, or who were born with birth defects because of it. She made the sculptures using body cast molds of the individuals.
Avishay Artsy of New Hampshire Public Radio’s Word of Mouth talked to Luce about her project; she says her documentary sculpture project captures the impact of Agent Orange in a way that’s different from photographs. In his report, Artsy speaks with someone else who appreciates the work but thinks the representation of body parts is a kind of objectification.
Luce’s sculptures were on display at Dartmouth earlier this month. Highly recommended.
