A red tide in the Northwest
The description at the beginning of this story is “It’s like an oil spill, but without the oil.” That can’t be good. But that’s how wildlife specialists are describing a bloom of algae along the coast in the Pacific Northwest.
The red algae bloom has killed hundreds of seabirds. The Coast Guard and wildlife rehabilitators are also treating hundreds of sickened birds, while researchers try to figure out what caused the bloom in the first place.
