How safe is your food

Listen live at 10am ET/7am PT

mpr1The number of E. coli contamination outbreaks has been increasing. It’s likely to continue to increase because of our current food production and processing. And those practices will also make it harder for investigators to find the source of the contamination.

Today on MPR’s Midmorning, Kerri Miller talks to food safety experts and a representative from the American Meat Institute.

The text above is NOT correct. According to USDA, which samples ground beef for E. coli O157:H7, the number of positive ground beef samples is down 45 percent since 2000. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the number of human E. coli infections (from all foods, they don't break out by source) is down 44 percent since 2000. Certainly, the media coverage makes it seem as if things are getting worse, but the facts show that our meat supply is safe and getting safer.
