Preserving distinctive neighborhoods
We love cities and neighborhoods, their histories, old photographs. We assume we’re not alone, given the popularity of this genre on PBS. So here’s a peek at some of the beauty of two of America’s quintessential Midwestern cities: Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Journalist and architecture critic Larry Millett has published a couple of guidebooks showing historic homes and businesses on Summit Avenue and the Minneapolis Lake district. Minnesota Public Radio produced this “walk” with Millet, to see some of the unique architecture of the Twin Cities.
Twin Cities Public Television has produced “Lost Twin Cities,” which apparently isn’t available online, but we were able to find this collection of photographs from Millett’s books.
Want to dig into the topic of architectural preservation in America’s cities? Here’s a place to start: a talk given by Kenneth Smith, one of the country’s most prominent experts urban revitalization and development, at Minnesota Public Radio’s UBS Forum in 2006. Listen
