50 years of Strunk and White
Today is the 50th anniversary of The Elements of Style, the classic guide to writing by William Strunk, Jr. and E.B. White.
Turns out, the book is older than that. White had used Strunk’s self-published guide to style while in college at Cornell, and in 1957, he wrote a piece in The New Yorker about it. Macmillan asked White to revise and expand the little book, and well, since then, it’s sold 10 million copies.
Morning Edition’s Renee Montagne explores more of the history of the book, and the new commemorative edition out today.
