The Heyday of the PI
Hearst is expected to announce the closure of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, perhaps this week, if it can’t find a buyer. The PI was always the second paper in Seattle, but it’s had a vibrant, sometimes wild, history in its 146 years.
KUOW News is airing an excellent series this week on the Post-Intelligencer. If you want to sample it, we recommend Amy Radil’s history of the paper, from its swinging days to its impact on life in the city. Listen
And be sure to check out Deborah Wang’s report on the newspaper rivalries that have enlivened Seattle, San Francisco, New York and Chicago for decades. Listen
We also think you’ll enjoy Patricia Murphy’s piece on Grant Heller, the PI’s staff photographer for 35 years. Listen
And don’t miss the other reports in the series, KUOW’s photos and its timeline of the newspaper’s history.
