Sound Opinions: Musical Turkeys of 2008
R.E.M’s Accelerate tops the list of Musical Turkeys of 2008 from Sound Opinions. And if that gets your blood boiling, that’s only the beginning.
Co-hosts Greg Kot and Jim Derogatis have had enough of the Best of lists… and their list of Turkeys includes a few of the same albums that grace those other lists.
A few choice picks, with assorted Kot/Derogatis commentary:
On Accelerate: they don’t do the vocal harmonies anymore, where’s Stipe? They’re referencing their past successes but not coming close to any of it.
My Morning Jacket Evil Urges: they tried too hard, they went out of their comfort zone and failed.
Brian Wilson That Lucky Old Sun: His fans want him to return to the genius of Pet Sounds, but it ain’t gonna happen.
Then they give listeners a go at it, and they shoot down the new Weezer album, John Legend’s Evolver, and the new Beck release. The listener commentary is almost as good as what Greg and Jim serve up.
Check out the list and/or listen to the podcast. And argue it out in the comments (on THEIR site LOL). The producers haven’t figured out the value of segmented shows yet, so you’ll need to go to about 13 minutes in to hear the Turkeys. (Or start at the beginning and hear their thoughtful review of the new Kanye West album – they like it.)
