NPR’s holiday serial, on-air and online
Here’s a little NPR tradition you might not know about: each year, a writer contributes an original holiday-themed story to the web site, in serial form. This year it’s Gregory Maguire, who has among his credits the authorship of Wicked, which was the basis for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical of the same name.
His story, “Matchless,” will come out in book form next fall, and Maguire will read it on All Things Considered on Christmas Day, but it unfolded in serial form on the NPR site last week. Just as Wicked reconsiders “The Wizard of Oz,” “Matchless” retells the Hans Christian Andersen story “The Little Match Girl.”
You can save your enjoyment of it for Christmas Day on the radio, or you can read the story in its entirety online.
