NPR Announces Job Cuts, Program Cancellations
All Things Considered covers the announcement today that NPR will eliminate 64 positions, leave another 21 positions unfilled, and end two daily programs: News and Notes and Day to Day. Departing NPR will be some of the most well-known voices of the network over the years (we won’t publish names pending confirmation of what we’ve heard over the past 24 hours).
NPR explains that the layoffs and cancellations result from the economic downturn, which has had a devastating on the underwriting revenue and foundation support that supplies about a third of NPR’s budget. NPR is projecting a deficit of $23 million for this fiscal year.
Day to Day and News and Notes will end March 20, 2009. Some stations may end broadcast of the programs before then.
